Chlorophyll is the pigment that makes algae, cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) and every plant green. It is the most important molecule in photosynthesis which allows plants to receive energy from light.
Our blood and chlorophyll have structures very similar. Hemoglobin is made up of four elements- hydrogen, carbon, oxygen and nitrogen built around iron. Chlorophyll is constructed of the identical elements built around magnesium. It’s green blood! In November 2001, a professor of Environmental Health Sciences at Johns Hopkins, Dr Thomas Kensler, reported that chlorophyll reduced DNA damage caused by exposure to a strong carcinogen called aflatoxin. He advised taking chlorophyll or consuming quantities of green vegetables to be the best way to reduce the risks of liver cancers and other cancers caused by toxins of the environment.
All plants contain chlorophyll. The vegetables highest in chlorophyll are alfalfa, wheat grass, asparagus, barley grass, bell peppers, beet greens, green cabbage, collard greens, brussel sprouts, broccoli, green beans, kale, leeks, green olives, parsley, romaine lettuce, spinach, Swiss chard, turnip greens and sea vegetables.
It is vital that our consumption of chlorophyll rich vegetables outweighs our consumption of harmful foods. After regular juicing and drinking green smoothies you will notice that your tastes change and you will naturally start to crave more green vegetables and fresh fruits.
