Function of Hydrochloric Acid in Stomach

Our bodies produce stomach acid, hydrochloric acid, to help us digest our food. In fact, hydrochloric acid is the only acid our bodies produce. All the the other acids are the by products of metabolism. In his book Alkalize or Die, Dr. Theodore Baroody states “Hydrochloric acid is absolutely essential for life.”

Low stomach acidity, also called hypochlorhydria, is a condition when the body is unable to make sufficient quantities of stomach acid. This slows the digestion process and the absorption of nutrients that are essential to good health. Zinc, iron, calcium, and B-complex vitamins, folic acid and others need adequate amonts of stomach acids in order to be absorbed at all. Deficiencies develop and lead to illness and disease without enough hydrochloric acid. Better absorption of nutrients can prevent osteoporosis, heal nerve disorders, anemia and many more illnesses.

Hydrochloric acid has many functions. It destroys all unhealthy bacteria, fungi, microorganisms, parasites that we ingest. If our stomach acid is lacking then we have don’t have protection against parasites. Yuk!

Not chewing our food enough keeps our bodies from assimilating the nutrients from food. These large food particles don’t get digested properly and turns to waste. This is why putting our vegetables and fruits in a blender can make a major improvement in our health. The blender breaks down these vegetables to the perfect size and our bodies can absorb them easily. Cooking our food does make vegetables easier to chew, but then most of the enzymes and vitamins are destroyed by the heat.

Addison’s disease, multiple sclerosis, urticaria, arthritis, asthma, parasites, autoimmune disorders, stomach carcinoma, Candidas, eczema, gastric polyps, celiac disease, dermatitis, diabetes, gall bladder disease, depression, hepatitis, osteoporosis, myasthenia gravis, ulcerative colitis, psoriasis and vitiligo are some conditions that are related to low hydrochloric acid.

Indicators of low stomach acid are heartburn, bloating, belching, flatulence, constipation, redness or dilated blood vessels on the nose or cheeks, hair loss for women, diarrhea, iron deficiency, yeast infections, adult acnes, weak fingernails and food allergies.

By chewing our foods properly, juicing, adding blended vegetable and fruit smoothies to our diets, and eating fermented foods we can expect improved absorption of nutrients, healing allergies, and decreasing infections.
