Buddhist monks bought and released 600 pounds of live lobsters off the coast of Prince Edward Island earlier this month. The monks blessed the crustaceans with purified water and prayers before they freed them back into the ocean.
No one knows exactly how much was spent buying the lobsters, but it’s possible the monks may have spent as much as $4800 on the compassionate gesture. Venerable Dan said they aren’t trying to convince people to become vegetarian but at least hoped it would inspire compassion.
He told CBS News, “This whole purpose for this to cultivate this compassion toward others. It doesn’t have to be lobsters, it can be worms, flies, any animals, drive slower so we don’t run over little critters on the street.”
